The Period. Disc 101
Everything you need to know, about using the Period. Disc, in one place.
The short video below shows how simple insertion and removal can be.
Picking the Right Size

Every Period. set includes two disc sizes, Normal and Small. Here’s how to choose:
Start with Normal. That’s your go-to. Most bodies do best with it.
Only try Small if: You know your insertion technique is solid, and Normal still leaks or feels off.
Every vagina is different. This is about finding your fit, without the guesswork.
Your step-by-step guide to
Insertion

Before you Insert
- Wash up. Clean hands. Clean disc. Rinse it with cold water, then boil it for 3-5 minutes or wash with a pH-balanced cleanser. (We use Period. Foam Wash, it’s gentle, kills bacteria, and won’t mess with your pH.)
- Optional lubricant. If your vagina feels drier, a bit of water or water-based lube on the rim can make insertion smoother.

Pinch It
Pinch the disc in half or into a figure-8. This gives you a smaller point of entry.

Insert It
- Find your position. Sit, squat, stand with a leg up, whatever makes you comfortable and your muscles relax.
- Angle + depth = key. Insert it fully horizontally toward your tailbone, not up. This gets the disc underneath your cervix, where it actually collects blood.

Tuck & Check
Once it’s in all the way, push the front rim up behind your pubic bone. This locks it in place.
Once tucked you should check its position. Insert a finger underneath the disc basin to feel for your cervix.
If you can feel your cervix outside of the basin, remove your disc and insert again.
💡 Why the tuck matters: The pubic bone acts like a shelf. If the front rim isn’t tucked behind it, the disc won’t stay put, and you’ll leak.
Mid-wear Experience
What to Expect

Up to 12 hours of wear. The disc sits in the vaginal fornix (behind the cervix), where it can comfortably collect more fluid than tampons or cups.
Auto-dumping = totally normal. If you pee and notice blood, your pelvic floor probably nudged the disc enough to release some flow. No big deal. What to do: After auto-dumping, use a clean finger to gently push the front rim back behind the pubic bone to reseat it.
Yes, you can forget it’s there. Sleep, shower, lift heavy, get it on, movie marathon. The disc won’t move as long as it’s positioned right.
Removal & Re-Insertion

When it's Time
- Wash your hands. (You know this drill.)
- Relax. Try sitting on the toilet or squatting in the shower and then take a deep breath.

How to Remove
- Hook the front rim. Slide a finger in and feel for the front edge, usually just behind the pubic bone.
- Pull slowly, horizontally. Keep the disc level to avoid spilling. Going too vertical could tip it like a bowl.
- Bear down if needed. Can’t reach it? Gently push down with your pelvic muscles. It’ll come lower.

Re-Inserting
- Empty into the toilet. Or sink. Whatever’s easier.
- Rinse in cold water first. Helps prevent staining.
- Then wash with a gentle, pH-friendly cleanser & warm water (or boil it). Period. Foam Wash is built for this: it kills odor-causing bacteria, soothes with plant extracts, and keeps your microbiome intact. You could also boil it for 3-5 minutes, as shown the the 'Cleaning' section.
- Ready to reinsert? Go for it, clean and confident.
Cleaning & Storage

After Each Use
- Rinse first with cold water. This helps prevent staining.
- Wash with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser. Like the Period. Foam Wash. It’s loaded with probiotics, sea salt, and chamomile. It kills bacteria, calms irritation, and respects your body’s balance.
💡 Why it matters: Harsh soaps and antibacterial cleansers can disrupt your vaginal ecosystem and shorten your disc’s lifespan.

After Your Period
Boil to sanitize.
- Option 1: On the stove. Boil a pot of water, drop in your disc for 4–5 minutes (never more than 7). Don’t let it touch the bottom, use tongs or a whisk.
- Option 2 (comes with Period. Pack): Period. Disc Sterilizer. Just fill it with boiling water, drop in your disc, pop on the lid, and wait 4–5 minutes. Done.

Storage
- Air-dry fully. Moisture = bacteria. Let it breathe.
- Use the breathable pouch while drying. Airtight containers trap moisture and bacteria. The satin pouch it came with? That’s your MVP. After drying, you can use any clean container.
- Check for damage. If it’s sticky, cracked, or just feels off, it’s time to retire it.

Tips & Tricks
Still Leaking?
Still Leaking?
If you're still leaking after following the guide to a T, then one of these tricks might help:
- Reinsert deeper.
- Make sure the rim is fully unfolded and tucked.
- Rotate it slightly to help it pop open.
Can’t reach it?
Can’t reach it?
- Try in the shower where you’re more relaxed and gravity’s on your side.
- Bear down gently and stay calm, it hasn’t disappeared and will come out.
High cervix?
High cervix?
- You may need to reach higher than expected. Totally normal.
When tucking it in place, try using different fingers to see which makes it easier. - Once it’s in place, it’s staying put.
Sex while wearing it?
Sex while wearing it?
- Yep, you can. The disc sits higher enough that neither you or your partner will notice it during penetrative sex.
- It's mostly mess-free. But if it's almost completely filled, before 'engaging' it's likely it will spill due to continuous 'poking'. Consider emptying before starting if it's been in for a while.
- Just check positioning after, it may shift slightly, and could use a small nudge to get back in place
Feel the need to “double check” it?
Feel the need to “double check” it?
- Do it. A clean finger sweep around the rim can give you peace of mind that it’s fully open and tucked.
- Another trick: gently press into the basin of the disc and feel for your cervix. If it’s centered and the disc feels snug around it you’re golden.
Pro moves
Pro moves
- Try using your thumb to push the disc higher post-insertion, it can help with a better seal.
- Try a couple of light kegels after inserting to nudge the disc into its happy place.
